Part 7 of OW IMMORTALISED: THE SELECTRON COMPUTER CHRONOGRAPH

The ‘Selectron Computer’ slide rule chronograph, one of Ollech & Wajs best known, most recognised and most enduring product lines, is the latest OW classic to be immortalised by graphic artist and typography expert - Bjoern Altmann. The collaboration is enabling us to see OW’s historic references in their prototypical state for the first time since production ceased over 50 years ago. The multipotentialite Ref. 003 was something straight out of the space age in 1969 - Advertising slogans like “The watch with the mechanical brain”and ‘Own today the watches of tomorrow’ were perhaps prophetic given the ubiquity of today's so-called smart watches. The ‘Selectron Computer Chronograph’ was aimed primarily aviators. Pilots from the Red Arrows and the RAF Phantom squadron are known to have used the watch in the early 1970s.

ABOUT ME:

In January 2022 I left a comfortable position as a Creative Partner of a very big international ad agency, to see if I could cut it client side. More accurately - to see if I could balance a duel career as both a marketing director and a consultant creative director, simultaneously. Poacher slash gamekeeper. In this column I record my activities at OW and explore the differences and similarities of the two roles.
